Beating the Bad Weather Blues: Rider Motivation, Winter Gear & Exciting New Beginnings at Jewels and Horses
This time of the year can feel like the toughest months for riders. The festive sparkle has faded, the mornings are dark, the ground is muddy, and motivation can feel as heavy as a wet turnout rug. But if there’s one thing horse people are good at, it’s showing up—whatever the weather.
Here at Jewels and Horses, we believe winter doesn’t have to mean putting your passion on pause. In fact, it can be a time to reset, refocus, and invest in both your riding mindset and the right gear to support you through the colder months.
And this winter has been a particularly special one for us…
A Little Catch-Up: Where We’ve Been
If it’s felt a little quiet from us, that’s because life has been wonderfully busy behind the scenes. Over the past year we’ve had a few big changes—buying a new home and running a livery yard, lots of renovations and new learning experiences, setting up our base for Jewels and Horses Equine Laundry (Rug Washing) and most exciting of all, building a brand-new physical home for Jewels and Horses.
We also have a very exciting collaboration pending…
What started as a dream has now become a reality, and we’re thrilled to share that our new high-end equestrian shop will be opening in Arborfield, Reading, Berkshire in early spring. It’s been a labour of love, and we cannot wait to welcome you through the doors.
But before spring arrives, let’s talk about surviving (and thriving) through winter.
Beating the January Blues: Staying Motivated as a Rider
Cold, dark evenings and endless mud can take the shine off even the most dedicated rider. Here are a few ways to keep your motivation alive through winter:
1. Adjust your expectations
Winter riding doesn’t have to mean intensive schooling sessions. Short, purposeful rides, groundwork, or even a quiet hack can be just as valuable—for you and your horse.
2. Focus on small wins
Maybe it’s maintaining fitness, improving straightness, or simply keeping a consistent routine. Celebrate progress, no matter how small.
3. Invest in comfort
Staying warm and dry makes all the difference. When you’re comfortable, you’re far more likely to ride—even on those grey, drizzly days.
Winter Gear That Works as Hard as You Do
One of the biggest motivation killers in winter is being cold, wet, and uncomfortable. The right clothing and horse equipment can transform your winter routine.
At Jewels and Horses, we carefully select high-performance, luxury equestrian wear that blends style with practicality:
- Insulated, waterproof riding coats that keep you warm without restricting movement
- Thermal base layers designed for breathability and comfort
- Winter riding tights and breeches with grip and fleece lining
- Weather-proof gloves and accessories to keep hands warm without losing feel on the reins
For horses, winter is all about protection and comfort too—quality rugs, durable boots, and well-fitted equipment make daily care easier and more enjoyable.
Good winter gear isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity.
Winter Is a Season of Preparation
While it might not feel glamorous, winter is the season that sets you up for success in spring. It’s the time to:
- Build a solid foundation
- Address small issues before competition season
- Strengthen the partnership between horse and rider
And just like training, building Jewels and Horses has been about preparation, patience, and passion.
Something Special Is Coming…
As we head towards early spring, excitement is building—not just for lighter evenings and better ground, but for the opening of our brand-new Jewels and Horses showroom in Arborfield.
We’re planning something very special for opening day…
Think beautiful collections, exclusive offers, and a celebration worthy of our amazing equestrian community. We’ll be sharing more details very soon, so keep an eye on the website and social media.
Trust us—you won’t want to miss it.
